Access from the country’s interior is normal and unaffected — officially confirmed by the Ministry of Tourism. Here is the easiest way in.
The main route
From Sofia and Plovdiv: road II-86
The route is the classic one and is entirely unaffected: Sofia → Plovdiv → Asenovgrad → Chepelare → Pamporovo (road II-86). The road is paved and maintained year-round and passes Asen’s Fortress and the Bachkovo Monastery — two stops worth making. The resort and its entire tourist infrastructure operate normally; the summer season opened officially on June 20 with the Minister of Tourism in attendance.
Honest about the Smolyan stretch
Coming from Smolyan? Use the signed bypass
In May a landslide hit a section of the Smolyan–Pamporovo road at Raykovski Livadi — the Smolyan-side approach only. Since June 8 a signed bypass carries cars up to 3.5 t; heavier vehicles use the Stoykite or Rozhen Pass routes. Travelers from Greece via Zlatograd/Rudozem also take the bypass or Rozhen — or, simplest of all, come via Plovdiv. Everything else — the resort, the hotel, the lifts, the trails — is untouched.
Along the way
Turn the drive into an excursion
Road II-86 is one of the most beautiful approaches to the Rhodopes. Plan stops at Asen’s Fortress above Asenovgrad and at the Bachkovo Monastery — the two stops add an hour or two and a lot of meaning. From Chepelare you take the final climb to the resort. Free on-site parking waits at the hotel — the car then rests for the whole stay, since the Studenets runs are about 300 m away and hotel transport to the slopes is available when needed.
